Press Release on the Appointment of Mdm Halimah Yacob as Chief Patron and Mr Sherman Kwek as Patron

SIAS is pleased to announce that Mdm Halimah Yacob, Chancellor of the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), and former President of the Republic of Singapore, has kindly accepted our invitation to become Chief Patron of SIAS.

SIAS is also pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Sherman Kwek as a Patron of SIAS.

Mdm Halimah succeeds Dr Tony Tan, also a former President of the Republic of Singapore, who served as SIAS’s Chief Patron from 12 Oct 2017 to 2 July 2024.

SIAS’s constitution requires the Chief Patron to be a “distinguished person who has been outstanding in their contributions to the betterment of Singapore’’.

Throughout her service to the nation first as a Unionist, Member of Parliament, then as a political office holder, and later as President, Mdm Halimah has forged a reputation as a people’s person and as a people’s President, always taking an interest in every individual, no matter their background, and most especially the disadvantaged. This very closely resonates with SIAS’s mission to advance and protect the interests of small investors and the creation of a level playing field for everyone.

Mdm Halimah has also represented Singapore in the international arena with grace and dignity, signing several agreements with other countries that have created numerous trade and business opportunities for Singaporeans.

Mr Kwek is a well-known corporate leader, serving as Chief Executive Officer of City Developments Ltd (CDL) since January 2018. CDL is one of Singapore’s premier real estate players and one of the market’s top blue chips.

Mr Kwek serves on various committees and boards such as the Go East Committee, FutureChina Committee and the Board of Trustees of the Chinese Development Assistance Council. He is also chairman of SingHealth’s Property Committee and a member of MOH Holdings’ (MOHH) Healthcare Infrastructure and Planning Committee.

SIAS is therefore delighted that Mdm Halimah has assumed the role of Chief Patron and Mr Kwek as Patron in this, our 25th anniversary, and is confident that with their support, we will grow even stronger over the next decade.
