This week, on 11th October 2021, SIAS launched Corporate Governance Week (CG Week) 2021 virtually. We were honoured to have an Opening Address by our Guest of Honour, Ms. Grace Fu, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment.

The week-long event kick-started with a conference, three workshops held virtually and a first hybrid event – SIAS Investors’ Choice Awards. On 18th October 2021, there is an investor virtual forum on the topic “What Are Your Rights When A Company Gets Into Trouble?”.

SIAS First Hybrid Investors’ Choice Awards 2021

For the first time, the SIAS Investors’ Choice Awards (ICA) presentation was held as a live hybrid event. On 12th October 2021 at Suntec Convention & Exhibition Centre, the Winner(s) were presented the award on site while the Runner-up(s) were featured remotely. The Guest of Honour of the event was Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam, Former President of Singapore & Chief Patron of SIAS, and he delivered an opening address.

With the regulatory reporting landscape moving towards an integrating reporting, listed entities no longer focus only on Governance (G), but also on the Environment (E) and Social (S) “ESG”. Therefore, SIAS has incorporated sustainability as the key criteria in the Singapore Corporate Governance Award for the first time and a new award criteria, SMART was jointly developed by NUS Centre for Governance and Sustainability. SMART uses a first-of-its kind assessment framework integrating both corporate governance and sustainability. The framework will assess the company’s sustainability practices as disclosed in their Sustainability Reports and use stock market performance as a screener to select the award winners.

ICA also recognises excellence in companies and individuals adopting good corporate governance and sustainability practices. SIAS, together with the industry partners, annually rate the best performing listed companies in governance and transparency for the benefit of investors. The following Awards were presented during the ceremony:

  • Singapore Corporate Governance Award
  • Shareholder Communications Excellence Award
  • Most Transparent Company Award
  • Financial Journalist Award

Special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs)

Mr David Gerald, Founder, President & CEO, SIAS, mentioned in his recent interview with The Business Times that SIAS will be taking on a larger role in the investment ecosystem, by appointing independent research teams to look at business combinations or de-SPAC transactions. SIAS observed that retail investors have a tendency to flock to where there are new investments, and they therefore need guidance.
